” 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” – Matthew 9:37–38 (ESV)
There is no doubt as we look at the world around us, there is work to be done. The question is: who’s responsibility is it to see the work is completed? Should we rely entirely on those who serve God vocationally? Should we rely entirely on those who’ve been called to spread the gospel in other cultures? Should we rely entirely on ‘the church’ to convert our family, coworkers, etc.?
There is too much work to be done to look at one group and think it is entirely their responsibility. As a matter of fact, until we’re certain we are fulfilling all of our responsibilities, we shouldn’t be looking outward to point the finger at all. We should look at the mission fields we currently live and move in. Our neighbors, our coworkers, our family, our community. These are the places we should ensure we are serving well in.
If we are all taking personal responsibility for our immediate circles, the work would be getting done to a far greater degree than it currently is. Instead we rely on someone else to be the harvester. Most of us have never had the experience of leading someone into the kingdom. We would say we’ve shared the gospel with someone because we had a spiritual conversation with someone at one point or because we’ve helped with a VBS, but we’ve never been a part of someone’s actual conversion.
If this is you, it’s time to get to work. Where is that passion you once had for the Lord? Where is that drive you felt when you first came to Christ to see others experience the freedom you’ve felt? Have you lost the fire? Have you lost focus?
Make it your personal goal this year to lead 3 people to Christ. That’s not a lot. That gives you four months to work with each of those people in their journey toward Christ. Commit before the Lord to see that many people enter the Kingdom because of your influence in their lives and see what opportunities Christ will unlock for you today, this week, this month, this year.
Be the few.
