Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” – James 4:7
This seems like a pretty simple concept but I think we get this backward far too often. We hear the voice of the Holy Spirit convicting us of our sin and instead of submitting to that we resist Him. We’d rather submit ourselves to our desires and passions.
We mix up the two in this verse and end up submitting ourselves to the devil and resisting God. The verse we live out is “Submit yourselves therefore to the devil. Resist God, and he will flee from you.” We wonder why God doesn’t seem to be present in our life. We wonder why He seems so distant at times. We wonder why He won’t bless us.
When we feel the Holy Spirit convicting us of our sin, let us submit ourselves to Him. Resist our fleshly desires and passions, and experience a closeness with God that surpasses any worldly desire or pleasure. This is how we knock down the strongholds the enemy is trying to put up in our lives. We find victory when we humble ourselves before the one who is the Victor.
